Despite being miles from home, many have not signed up for the 16 to 25 student railway card, which offers one-third off most rail fares.
Students are balking at the £26 cost, describing it as “too costly” for one year.
David Thompson, 19, a music student at Canterbury Christ Church University, sees it as “vital” that students take on this chance to cut journey fares.
He said: “Without the student railway card I wouldn’t be able to go home twice as much as I do now.
“Using the card I can go back home every other week costing me £30 ticket return.
“Unlike my flatmates who have stayed here for the past 3 weeks, I can go home and visit my family more regularly.”
With the fear of overdrafts many students find it hard to find the funds to pay for a student railcard let alone journeys home.
Lee Andrews, also a student at Canterbury Christ Church University, feels as though the railway card should be given free for students.
He said: “Being a student I can’t afford to pay £26 and my journey fare home.
“With that money I could just go back home at Christmas and use the money for a weeks worth of food shopping.”
